The authorities in the Brazilian state of Bahia have taken steps to replenish local livestock farmers’ sheep and goat herds.

Following more than three years of drought conditions, the state has decided to distribute 40,000 sheep and goats to farmers in Bahia’s extensive semi-arid regions.

Farmers who qualify for assistance will receive five female animals and, in addition, the authorities will allocate one male animal for every 20 or 30 females.

In 18 months’ time, according to the state government’s plan, each of the initial recipients of the assistance will be able to donate newly born goats and sheep to a neighbouring farm and the herd rebuilding exercise will continue.
