Brazilian leather exports exceed $2.5 billion in record year
09/01/2014
This figure includes the value of shipments overseas of hides and skins from raw to finished and constitutes an all-time record, industry association CICB said on announcing the results. It represents growth in value of more than 20% compared to 2012.
CICB president, José Fernando Bello, said the Brazilian leather sector faced considerable challenges in 2014 and that there was little chance of its being able to maintain this level of growth.
As examples of the difficulties the industry will face this year, he pointed to a lack of progress on a proposal (called ‘Reintegra’) to refund some of the tax revenues exporters pay, and Brazil’s exclusion from the list of countries included in the European Union’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP), which allows exporters in developing countries to pay lower duties on their exports to the EU.
CICB has told leatherbiz that a breakdown of the 2013 figures, showing the share of the total volume and value of exports attributable to finished leather, crust and wet blue will be available in the coming weeks.
