Kansas confirms lower cattle numbers in feedlots

08/01/2014
The authorities in the US have confirmed a noteable decline in the number of cattle in feedlots in the important cattle-raising state of Kansas.

At the start of December, Kansas feedlots held just over 2 million head of cattle, a 6% decline compared to the same date in 2012.

Local media quoted Todd Domer, head of communications for the Kansas Livestock Association, as saying drought conditions in 2011 and 2012 had made an important impact on the numbers because farmers faced with dried-up pastures and low levels of water had opted to send more cattle to slaughter than usual, leaving smaller herds.

He said the situation began to improve in 2013 and that if weather conditions in 2014 are good (with enough rainfall) herds will start to build up again, although it will be three years before these increases make an impression on slaughter numbers.
