Cattle farmers in Ecuador fear anthrax

06/01/2014
Farmers in an important cattle-raising region of Ecuador have called for the country’s agriculture ministry, MAGAP, to carry out urgent investigations into a series of deaths among livestock.

A number of cattle have died in the north of Manabí province, regarded as one of the most important cattle-producing regions of the country, with a herd numbering an estimated 700,000 head. Some observers have suggested shortages of feed and water may be the most likely explanation, but others say they fear an outbreak of anthrax after preliminary tests on some of the dead animals.
