Progress at Portuguese leathergoods training centre

A training centre for leathergoods and footwear designers in northern Portugal is undergoing renovation.

Eduardo Costa, director of the Footwear and Design Academy in the town of São João da Madeira near Porto, has said an investment of EUR 400,000, all of which the institute raised itself, has already gone into the project. This first phase has involved remodelling the entrance and classroom areas.

The academy offers professional training in cutting, stitching, assembly and finishing and currently has 58 trainees in attendance. The new classroom has capacity for 80 people in all. Mr Costa has described the space as clean and modern, with lots of natural light.

Future phases will involve knocking an older part of the centre down and building a new refectory. When the project is complete, the total investment could be as high as EUR 4 million.

“We want to make the most of the facilities we have,” Mr Costa told local media recently, “but we are trying to transform something from the 1960s into a modern building.”
