Growth for Spanish shoe exports
18/12/2013
During the January-September period this year, Spanish footwear manufacturers and brands exported 110 million pairs, compared to 108.7 million for the same months in 2012.
In terms of value, the figures for the same months in 2013 show export revenues of more than EUR 1.8 billion, an increase of 12.5% compared to the corresponding period in 2012.
Shipments to Asian markets increased by 25% year on year, and currently represent 8% of the total. Commenting on this development, Spanish footwear industry association FICE said on releasing the figures: “Bearing in mind that 60% of the world’s population lives in Asia, we have to keep strengthening Spain’s presence in that part of the world.”
It said that consumers have become “more demanding” and now put a higher value on the quality of shoes and the country they come from than in previous years.
According to FICE, this trend is evident in the share of Spanish shoe exports that leather footwear has. Although shoes with leather uppers accounted for only 32.7% of the total volume, with 36 million pairs over the nine months, they contributed 62.4% of the overall value with more than EUR 1.1 billion.
