PTA wants more control over exports

16/12/2013
The Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has said that the association should be given increased access to leather exports, as containers of wet blue are being smuggled out as finished leather.

Its chairman told local press that the practise is resulting of a loss of duty for the government and that people were falsely claiming export rebates. He suggested full container loads should only be allowed to pass through Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Sialkot, and that any leather shipment weighing more than 78 tons should be referred to PTA for checking.

The value of leather exports grew 11% over the past three months to reach $407.5 million, compared with $365 million in the same period last year.
