China has a big appetite for beef

Demand for beef may be slowing in developed markets such as North America and the European Union, but consumption in China is likely to show a 7% increase in 2013 to reach a volume of 6 million tonnes. The figures were quoted in a recent article in the Financial Times.

According to the newspaper, demand will increase again in China in 2014, by an estimated 3.3% in volume. It said consumers there are increasingly enthusiastic about eating beef after a number of food safety scares involving pork and poultry. It quoted the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) as saying global trade in beef will show growth of almost 5% for 2013, reaching 8.4 million tonnes.
