Simple leather course makes social impact in southern Chile

13/12/2013
A group of women in the town of Panguipulli in southern Chile are set to become leathergoods entrepreneurs after completing a course in tanning and leathergoods manufacture.

Eighteen local women completed the course and will now aim to set up businesses to make and sell small leathergoods.

The Chilean government supported the course under a wider programme called Working Women at the Head of Households, which has the aim of equipping women with the skills to start up small businesses to support their families.

One of the women involved, Ema Pérez, said at the end of the course that she and the other participants would be “grateful for ever” to have learned skills that will allow them to generate income for their families.

Owing to the enthusiasm of the 18 Panguipulli entrepreneurs, a second phase of the course will take place in 2014, in which the women will learn new techniques to make more valuable leathergoods, such as bags and belts.
