US-based car interior specialist Katzkin Leather has hired automotive veteran Bob Lutz as senior adviser to help the firm grow.

Mr Lutz has held senior leadership positions at some of the world's top carmakers, including Chrysler, Ford and General Motors, where he served as vice-chairman until 2010.

"Katzkin is on the forefront of revolutionising vehicle interior customisation," said Mr Lutz.  "I am looking forward to helping them further push the boundaries of this emerging category."

CEO Brooks Mayberry added: "Bob joins our organisation at the right time, as we continue to expand production capacity with a new plant opening in Mexico to extend our US just-in-time manufacturing and Asian manufacturing."

The company has grown due to its customisation expertise with consumers spending more than $30 billion annually in specialty automotive products.

"The lines between custom vehicles from the factory and the aftermarket are blurring as consumers demand more choice," said Mr Mayberry.

With a nationwide installer base featuring over 2,500 restyling locations, Katzkin has created nearly two million custom interiors in the past 30 years.
