Luxury hotel group born of tanning industry travel travails

Representatives of the global tanning industry (and their families) may sometimes complain about the amount of travel involved, but Bernabò Bocca, president of the Sina Hotels group, has said it was this aspect of the leather industry that led to creation of the chain of luxury of hotels he runs.

“My family’s background is in the tanning industry,” he said in a recent interview with Italian business media, “and my father travelled a lot. He stayed in one hotel in Florence that he loved so much he eventually bought it, restored and re-opened it under the name Villa Medici.”

That was in 1959 and the Villa Medici is still the flagship of the Sina Group, which now comprises 11 luxury hotels in eight Italian cities. These include the Bernini in Rome, the Brufani Palace in Perugia, the Palace Maria Luigia in Parma and the Centurion Palace overlooking the Grand Canal in Venice.
