JBS collected the award, the Kurt Politzer Prize for Technology 2013, at a ceremony on December 6. The prize is promoted by the Brazilian Chemical Industry Association, ABIQUIM, in an attempt to recognise creativity in research and innovation in the chemical sector, with market potential and a focus on sustainability.
A hydrolysis process separates protein from chrome in wet blue shavings. The protein, in powder or liquid form, is sold as raw material to chemical companies for use in the manufacture of new products for the leather industry. The extracted chrome can be reused in the tanning and retanning processes, or sold to other industries.
On receiving the award, JBS’s production manager at the Campo Grande tannery, Luciano Silveira, said: “Technological innovation gives us the opportunity to transform a material that was regarded as waste and sent to landfills into material we can use to manufacture other products, generating revenue and minimising environmental impacts.”
