Uruguayan leather sector may be set to grow again

Reports from Uruguay say the leather industry in the South American country has lost 7,000 jobs in the last ten years.

Current employment levels in Uruguay’s tanneries are around 2,500 positions, but commentators have said the sector could be poised for growth again after a difficult period, particularly since the start of the global economic downturn in 2008.

In preparing for a busy year next year, industry representatives have said the authorities in Uruguay need to take steps to stop raw hides from leaving the country. The country’s slaughter levels are around 2 million head a year, but estimates suggest 250,000 hides may be leaving each year without any processing in Uruguayan tanneries.
