New accolade for French tannery

A tannery in Espelette, near Bayone in the French Basque Country, has won a second major accolade. In July, Paris-based business newspaper La Tribune named Marie Hiriart-Carriat, who runs the Carriat tannery, as the winner in the Entrepreneur category of the 2013 La Tribune Women’s Awards.

Now Ms Hiriart-Carriat, whose grandparents founded the tannery in 1927, has been named as one of the outstanding business personalities in the Aquitaine region of France for 2013. She picked up her award at a special ceremony in Anglet at the end of November.

Carriat started off making saddle leather before moving into furniture upholstery. When the current managing director took over from her father in the 1990s, she made the move into making leather for interior design and, especially, high-end luxury accessories and now counts luxury brands such as Hermès among her clients.

The company currently has 60 employees and a turnover of EUR 18 million. At the time of the Aquitaine award, Marie Hiriart-Carriat said her company remained committed to adapting to changes in the marketplace, constantly updating the technology it uses and reacting quickly to the demands of the market sectors it seeks to serve.
