Arequipa tanners see benefits of better environmental management

The programme, called Viable Environmental Management, is run by the Peruvian government with financial and technical support from Europe. It concentrates on helping smaller companies consume raw materials, energy and water more efficiently and make a smaller impact on the environment.
Speaking at the end of the six-month period, a German consultant involved in the project, Markus Tritschler, said many of the steps the tanners had learned to take were simple and based on common sense. But he said another part of it was learning to make leather with more environmentally efficient chemical products.
A bonus from this, though, is that the finished leather the tanners are now able to make is of higher quality and, therefore, more valuable.
