Tannery visit to help produce alpaca improvements

A group of 76 community leaders from the Puno region of Peru received funding to carry out a visit to the city of Arequipa in mid-November. The purpose of the trip was to give them a fuller understanding of the work a variety of Arequipa companies carry out to add value to by-products from Puno alpaca herds, including hides.

Pieles y Cueros del Perú was one of the companies the group visited.

Founded in 2007, Pieles y Cueros del Perú has established itself as an export-focused producer of leather from llamas, sheep and peccary, as well as alpacas. It also makes a limited number of finished products from Peruvian leather, including gloves and slippers.

After the visit, the community leaders said they wanted to take back to Puno the knowledge they had gained about the various uses of alpaca by-products and promote projects that will help their communities improve the quality of the materials the animals give, making them even more valuable than they are at the moment.
