The president of the China Leather Industry Association, Su Chaoying, has said the footwear industry today faces “formidable hurdles” in the short and medium term.

Speaking at the eighteenth UITIC Congress, which the International Union of Shoe Industry Technicians organised in Guangzhou from November 13-16, Mr Su said amazing changes had taken place in the global footwear industry in the last 25 years.

He said the industry’s centre of gravity had moved in that time from more traditional centres of production and export to “huge shoe-producing clusters” in Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, and China, altering the footwear landscape “in fundamental ways”.

He added: “Along the way, the new players have seen challenges emerge on costs, labour supply, social responsibility, environment, and other issues, all of which mean the shoe sector today is facing formidable hurdles in the short and medium term.”

Mr Su said he hoped the Guangzhou event would give footwear industry professionals from all over the world a chance to address “the challenges that will define our future”.
