Good export figures for Australian beef despite decline in demand from Japan

13/11/2013
Australia exported 104,000 kilos of beef and veal during the month of October, an increase of 11% on the volume for the same month last year.

Commentators said increased demand from South Korea, the US and China, and the beginnings of a recovery in shipments to Indonesia, had helped to compensate for a fall in exports to Japan.

Australian packers say their business in Japan is coming under intense pressure from competitors in the US. Compared to the same month in 2012, their October shipments this year were down by 12% in volume, and the combined total for the year so far shows a fall of 6% compared to the first ten months of last year.
