Record month for Brazilian hides again, but trouble ahead

13/11/2013
Brazil has reported exports of hides and skins for the month of October with a total value of $235 million.

This figure represents the highest amount ever for any month on record. It shows an increase of 27.4% on the same month last year.

Over the first ten months of this year, the value of hide and skin exports from Brazil has gone up by 19% compared to the same period in 2012, reaching a total of just over $2 billion.

Industry association CICB warned that future exports may be affected by a change in Brazil’s trading status with the European Union (EU). More than 35% of its exports of hides and skins have gone to the EU this year, but CICB executive president, José Fernando Bello, said on reporting the October figures that Brazil’s exclusion from the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) next year would make it hard for Brazilian exporters to keep growth going.

GSP is a system of exemption from tariffs aimed at helping developing economies. Brazil’s exclusion from it from January will lead to exports to the EU being 3.5% more expensive, Mr Bello said.
