Automotive is taking over in Guanajuato

The head of sustainable economic development for the Mexican state of Guanajuato, Héctor López Santillana, has said that fully 60% of the state’s finished leather is now going into automotive upholstery, leaving traditional markets such as footwear struggling to find enough supply.

Estimates suggest the hundreds of tanners active in Guanajuato, especially in and around the city of León, process a combined total of 50,000 hides a day. Mr López said 30,000 of these are now being bought by automotive-focused customers.
