Peruvian industry presents footwear concerns

Leather and footwear industry representatives in Peru have called on the government in Lima to take anti-dumping measures against footwear imports from Asia.

Spokesman Vladimir de la Roca Morán has claimed in comments to local media that falsely cheap shoes from China now account for 50% of all shoes on the Peruvian.

Mr de la Roca also claimed Chinese tanners are buying up Peruvian hides and skins, leaving local tanners and finished product manufacturers short of raw material. He also said the government was failing to police its own regulations on product-labelling, saying footwear made from synthetic material were being sold as leather shoes. “Consumers are being cheated,” he said.
