Severe power breakdowns in Pakistan have led to between 20% and 30% of hides of sacrificial animals being damaged, causing loss of about Rs2.5 billion ($25 million) to tanneries as well as hide dealers, according to local reports.

Pakistan Tanners Association chairman Sheikh Saqib Saeed said he had spoken to tanners all over the country, and apart from the direct due to skin damage, there will be an additional loss of Rs4 billion ($37 million) in foreign exchange.

He said tanneries are being supplied gas just for one day a week, and power is suspended for six hours a day.

“The government must intervene to ensure that the tanning units do not shut down,” he stressed.
