Bangladesh: Skin trading at deadlock

28/10/2013
Reports from Bangladesh say that skins are piling up after tanners and skin traders failed to agree on prices for the skins of sacrificial animals that have become available following the Muslim festival of Eid ul-Alha last week.

Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA), the Finished Leather, Leathergoods and Footwear Exporters’ Association and the Hide and Skin Merchants Association agreed on set prices for skins so as to limit the price hikes from traders that were seen last year.

However, some traders are not happy and are demanding higher rates.

“We have almost kept our purchase of rawhide from the traders on halt due to the higher prices they are demanding,” said Md Shaheen Ahmed, chairman of the BTA.
