Germans still favour Italian footwear

Organisers of the recent Munich-based footwear show Moda Made in Italy have said they are pleased with the attendance which was comparable to previous years despite the unfavourable economic climate.

They said the event offered opportunities for Italian footwear manufacturers not only in Germany, but also in neighbouring markets such as Switzerland, Austria and northern Europe.

In the first six months of 2013, Italy exported 16.3 million pairs of shoes to Germany, down 3.8% compared with the same period in 2012. The value also experienced a slight decline of 0.7% to €427 million, although for leather shoes, the decline was less significant.

"We are pleased with the results of the latest edition of Moda Made in Italy, especially considering the ongoing difficulties experienced by the German and European market in general," said Cleto Sagripanti, president of Assocalzaturifici, the Italian footwear manufacturers association.

Germany is the second-largest market both in value and volume terms for Italian exports.
