Focus on high-end saves French tannery

Nicolas Degermann, owner of the Degermann tannery, one of only two remaining in the Alsace region of France, has said a focus on high-end calf skin saved the business when the mass tannery market in the region collapsed.

“There will always be cheaper elsewhere, for example in South America where the raw material is abundant,” he told L’Alsace. “We could not fight on volumes and prices. The only solution was to turn our focus to expensive products and high quality.”

The family run tannery was established in 1832 and turns out about 150,000 feet of calf leather per month for leathergoods, footwear and watch straps.

After a dip in the business in 2009 when orders from a major customer declined, the tannery is now aiming to double its turnover. However, Mr Degermann admits it is not an easy task with the price of raw material rocketing. “We have never paid so much for skins,” he said.
