Bangladesh: Leather industry fixes price for Eid skins
15/10/2013
The Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leathergoods and Footwear Exporters’ Association, Bangladesh Tanners Association and Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchants Association (BHSMA) said they will pay Tk 85-95 ($1 - $1.20) per square foot of salted cowhide in Dhaka and Tk 75-80 elsewhere, Tk 50-55 for goat skin and for Tk 40-45 for buffalo skin.
“The biggest buyers of Bangladesh’s leather are Italy and China, but prices are declining there in line with the international market. Plus, the international leather fairs this year did not bring in our expected level of orders,” Ali Hossain, chairman of BHSMA, told local press. “We do not know where the market will be in the next six months, so we have declared an average price considering various factors.”
It is estimated that half the industry’s hides for the year are collected after the festival, as it is traditional for families to sacrifice animals.
