US: Up to 100,000 cattle die in blizzard

Tens of thousands of cattle have died in South Dakota following a blizzard that has been described as potentially the most costly in the history of the state’s agriculture industry.

Silvia Christen, executive director of the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association, said most ranchers she had spoken to estimated between 20% and 50% of their herds had been killed.

“I have never heard of anything like it,” she said. “And none of the ranchers I have talked to can remember anything like it.”

Local reports say state officials are calculating the multimillion-dollar impact to the regional economy from Friday’s storm, as ranchers began digging out cattle that are buried beneath the snow.

The next immediate challenge for ranchers will be carcass disposal to prevent the spread of disease.
