Land housing a tannery formerly owned by Odisha Leather Corporation in the Boudh district of eastern India has been sold to a private investor who intends to use the 2.85 acre site for other purposes, according to reports.

Locals were reportedly saddened that the government did not fund the revival of the tannery, which has been out of action since 1985 and which was the main employer in the area.

The-then Boudh king Narayan Prasad Deb established the tannery in 1922 to manufacture shoes, with finished products and tanned leather exported all over the country, reported the Indian Express.
