Funds on offer for Nigerian leather companies

Leather products manufacturers in the Nigerian state of Abia are from next month to benefit from a loan facility from Diamond Bank designed specifically for the leather industry.

Lack of finance has been a major challenge faced by leather sector operators, reported local press, and a programme for the meat and leather industry, partially funded by the British government, organised a workshop for the leather cluster in Aba to prepare them for the loan.

The idea was is to guarantee the artisans, because the banks are very nervous about doing business with them. “Apart from their normal driving licenses, we are going to create an identification card for them, like a chip. So that anybody with that card can approach Diamond Bank for credit,” Al-Habib Onifade of INL Consulting told Business Day.

The target areas of the project are Kano, Kaduna and Lagos.
