Chimont seeks a name for new retanning concept

Italian leather chemicals company Chimont has told leatherbiz it is still searching for a commercial name for a new polymer-based retanning concept.

Chimont has already produced successful samples of finished leather with a range of characteristics using the new process.

One example is chrome-tanned hides that the Tuscany-based company says have a similar appearance to that of vegetable-tanned hides, while retaining the durability, water-resistance and light-resistance of chrome-tanned leather. Another is leather developed specifically to have enhanced, durable water-resistance. A third is to make lightweight leather suitable for garments, which will keep its suppleness.

Chimont’s key point is that its new process will reduce the costs usually associated with retanning these properties into hides in a long-lasting way.

Chief executive, Remo Petroselli, has told leatherbiz that the new concept can work with any vegetable-extract retanning agent, but that it’s the “new-generation polymer-based treatment” that makes the difference. He said: “In terms of chemistry, it’s the polymer that makes the properties of the retanning agent effective and long-lasting. It connects the fibres in the hide without altering their overall shape. So whatever effect you want to create, you can have it.”
