Clariant remembers leather in its 2012 Sustainability Report

Despite classifying its results from leather as “discontinued” and its ongoing efforts to find a buyer for its leather business unti, chemicals manufacturer Clariant has made extensive references to its leather chemicals output in its 2012 Sustainability Report.

The report is strong, leading to Clariant’s inclusion on September 12 in the European Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI Europe). “In order to be listed in the DJSI, the company had to record an outstanding and sustainable performance in the economic, environmental and social dimension,” Clariant said on making the announcement.

Clariant’s 2012 Sustainability Report includes a substantial entry on its EasyWhite Tan chrome-free tanning process, which it says has simplified and shortened the production of wet white. Another claim is that Granofin Easy F-90, the tanning agent around which EasyWhite Tan has come together, reduces the consumption of salt and water during tanning.

“EasyWhite Tan leather has approximately the same quality characteristics and range of applications as chrome-tanned leather,” the report continues. “Granofin Easy F-90 is already undergoing intense practical trials with customers, such as shoe manufacturer ECCO. The company is convinced of the new leather’s enormous potential. Trials are also under way in China.”
