UK culls 17,000 cattle due to TB in the first half

Figures published by the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs show 17,285 cattle were culled in the first half of the year in the UK due to TB.

The government has ordered the culling of 5,000 badgers in south west England in an attempt to stop the spread. Some evidence suggests sustained culls of badgers under controlled conditions could reduce TB in local cattle by 12-16% after four years of annual culls, and five years of follow-ups.

Owen Paterson, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and a former tanner, said TB could devastate the UK cattle industry.

During the same period last year, 5% more cattle were slaughtered due to TB in the UK.
