Calls for enquiry into imported Colombian hides

A politician in New South Wales has said he will ask Australia’s senate to conduct an enquiry into consignments of imported hides from Colombia last year. Bill Heffernan, a former chairman of a senate committee on rural affairs, has claimed that seven containers of the raw material were incorrectly labelled as leather from Uruguay and made it through customs checks far too easily in September 2012.

Local media have said the material was imported by a trader who placed the hides in a local cold store while waiting to complete a deal with a buyer in China, but their agreement fell through and the storage company was told it could sell the material and keep the money or dispose of it. The storage company then informed the authorities and the hides have been destroyed.
