New figures confirm decline in Indonesian herd size

Statistics continue to emerge showing that fears of a sharp fall in the cattle population of Indonesia are well founded.

At the start of September, the country’s Central Statistics Agency (BPS) said numbers had fallen by 1.2 million head in the last two years in East Java, the most important livestock farming region in the country.

The latest figures from BPS put Indonesia’s cattle and buffalo herd size at 14.2 million head in May 2013, compared to 16.7 million in June 2011.

Chairman of the Indonesian Cattle and Buffalo Breeders’ Association, Teguh Boediyana, has told local media that restrictions on beef and cattle imports have led to rising prices for domestically raised cattle. This, he said, has led to a “worrying decline” in the cow population of East Java as farmers have moved to cash in on their dairy cow herds.
