Heavy snow affects people and livestock in Peru

02/09/2013
The heaviest snows for ten years in the high Andes in southern Peru have led the national government to declare a state of emergency in eight provinces.

Temperatures have fallen to minus-20 degrees Celsius and accumulations of up to 90 centimetres of snow have built up in some areas. The authorities have reported at least one person dead, and the conditions have also taken a sever toll on local livestock populations.

In total, more than 80,000 people and almost 700,000 sheep, llamas and alpacas are being affected and reports say more than 25,000 animals have died already.
