Hermes finances ringworm vaccinations to protect skins

The French brand is facing a dwindling supply of calfskin because meat traders are responding to a drop in consumer demand for veal and thus rearing and slaughtering fewer animals. Demand for luxury leathergoods is growing and has forced the price of quality hides up by 20% to 30% this year.
Unlike its investment in crocodile farms, investing in calves makes little sense for Hermes as most of the animal's value lies in its meat and only one or two skins out of 10 are good enough for its handbags.
