Pakistan: government urged to prioritise leather in duty refunds as Eid al-Adha approaches

30/08/2013
The president of the Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (PLGMEA), Fawad Ijaz Khan, has complained that member companies across the country are being kept waiting for duty refunds valued at more than $9.5 million

Customs collection authorities have been slow to release the money, Mr Fawad said in comments at the end of August. Pakistan’s financial year runs from July to June. The PLGMEA president said he would ask the government for urgent help in freeing up the money to give to his member companies.

He said the government should make companies in the leather sector a priority because of the cash-flow pressures that build up in the industry in many Muslim countries around the time of the Eid al-Adha festival, which this year falls around October 15. Large numbers of sheep, goat and cattle are slaughtered for the festival and tanners and garment manufacturers have to buy up and treat a substantial amount of hides and skins in a very short space of time to stop the raw material from spoiling.
