Province prepares for quebracho celebration

Argentina’s Chaco province is preparing for its annual celebration of the quebracho tree on August 26, in which local school children will help plant new trees, which is good news for future supplies of quebracho as a raw material for tanning agents for vegetable-tanned leather.

In the far north-east of the country, Chaco has the warm, sunny climate that the quebracho tree needs to thrive.

The authorities in Chaco recognise the economic importance of the tree, for wood as well as for tanning agents.

Michele Battaglia, chief executive of Indunor, a specialist Argentinean leather chemicals company, part of the Silvateam Group, has told leatherbiz that quebracho wood will typically yield around 20% of its weight in tannins. As the wood has a high specific weight of 1.2 tonnes per cubic-metre, this gives up to 250 kilos of tannin per cubic-metre of wood.
