Columbia’s leather, leathergoods and footwear manufacturers can create 125,000 new jobs in the next ten years, according to a consultant advising the government in Bogotá on economic growth.

Saúl Hoyos, director of an organisation called the Centre for Thinking for Competitive Strategies, has said leather and footwear can increase their share of Columbian manufacturing from 3.3% to 5.6% in that timeframe and increase their combined workforce from the current level of 225,000 to 350,000.

“This would consolidate the sector’s position as one of the most important in the country from a socio-economic point of view,” he said.

Commerce minister, Sergio Díaz-Granados, said he believes leather and footwear can increase their output in Columbia by around 8% per year.

President of national industry association Acicam, Luis Gustavo Flórez, said he hoped the plan would bring stability to employment in the leather and footwear industries; he pointed out there is considerable fluctuation in the numbers employed depending on the time of year. “We need companies to be working at about 90% of capacity,” he said, “and we need people to have stable jobs.”
