Australia’s beef industry achieved export revenues of more than US $4.6 billion in fiscal year 2012-2013 (July 2012-June 2013).

This figure represents an increase of 8% compared to the previous financial year and of 11% compared to the average over the last five years. It is the second-highest total on record, after 2008-2009.

In terms of volume, Australian packers exported more than a million tonnes of beef and veal over the 12-month period. This is 7% higher than in the previous financial year and 8% above recent average levels.

Exports to China represented the biggest growth. In the course of 2012-2013, Australia exported just over 90,000 tonnes of beef and veal to China, with a value of more than US $375 million. This represents growth of almost 600% in value.

For other important markets, results were mixed. US $1.3 billion as the value of exports to Japan represents a decline of 7% compared to the previous financial year. Shipments to the US, however, were up by 9% to US $890 million.
