Leather jewellery brand expands to Uruguay

A specialist Argentinian jewellery brand, Delgé, has opened its first concession outside the country, choosing the Sofitel in Carrasco, one of Montevideo’s classiest suburbs. All of its concessions are in luxury hotels, but until now it has operated only in Buenos Aires.

Delgé specialism is in combining precious stones with exotic skins, including crocodile, lizard and stingray.

Founder, Ignacio Patanian, was working as a lawyer and became fascinated with the jewellery industry through a client; he signed up for courses in design and in gemology and eventually gave up legal practice to launch Delgé.

All of the pieces, mostly bracelets and rings, are one-offs and handmade. Mr Patanian describes his predilection for including exotic leather in the pieces as one of the things that makes Delgé stand out. “I spend a lot of time in tanneries,” he says. “It’s a time-consuming process, but it’s enriching. You have to go through a lot of trial and error before finding raw material that is just right.”
