New crocodile abattoir opens in the Philippines

A new abattoir specifically for exotic meats, including crocodile, opened in the southern Philippines in July. The new facility, the JK Mercado and Sons Agricultural Enterprises (JKMSAE), which is in Kapalong, Davao del Norte, on Mindanao, will also supply crocodile skins to tanners. Slaughter levels are likely to be around 24 animals a day.

Company chairman, Vicente Mercado, has told local media that luxury group LVMH will be one of the buyers of the skins, which will come from the local saltwater crocodile, the crocodylus porosus. However, reports said a local footwear and leathergoods manufacturer, Saldaña, which has been specialising in finished products made from exotic skins since the 1950s, would also be a potential buyer.

JKMSAE also runs a 10-hectare farm on which it breeds crocodiles, the crocodylus porosus for trade and, alongside it, another breed, the crocodylus mindorensis, for conservation. Both farm and abattoir have CITES certification, the company said.
