Family run tannery praises oak bark method

The owner of family-run tannery in Devon, south west England, has told local press that there is still a lot of value in oak bark tanned leather – despite it taking 12 months to process.

J & FJ Baker & Co has been owned by Andrew Par's family for 150 years and supplies to high-end shoe manufacturers and saddlers.

The oak bark is stripped from trees during spring, dried and kept for two or three years.

“It produces a very strong, hardwearing but lightweight leather,” he told This is Cornwall, but admitted: "The reason we're still using it is that it's possible we got left behind.”
