Fish leather popular for car interiors

The co-owner of a fish tannery in Australia has said its leather is very popular for car interiors.

David MacDermott, who runs the Mermaid Leather tannery in Esperance with his brother, told ABC News that fish leather works well for auto trimming, and trimming for motorbikes and boats, as it can be used as inlay panels.

“The product lends itself to creativity because you have to think outside the box to use it, regarding the size and shape,” he said.

He said his favourite end use is for art – a local artist uses the discarded leather trimmings to add texture to paintings.
