SAPAL, the company that runs the common effluent treatment plant for the tanning industry in León, Mexico, has invited tanners there to witness at first hand progress on a project to expand the facility. Its president, Pedro González García, said on making the announcement that the development, which involves an investment of $6m, will bring economic and environmental benefits to tanners in the town.

León has an estimated 500 tanneries, although some of these are very small. Mr González García said he had invited more than 300 of the larger operators in the city to visit the site to see the expansion at first hand.

He said SAPAL’s aim was to make it possible for these tanneries to use 100% recycled water in their operations. He estimated that the project is 40% complete but will be fully operational in the early part of 2014.
