Trade agreement with the EU opens up research possibilities for Colombia

07/08/2013
Colombia’s leather, leathergoods and footwear sectors exported products worth $264.5 million in 2012, industry bodies have reported. However, only 16.7% of the total value came from exports to Europe.

Industry representatives have said that a free trade agreement between Colombia and the European Union is unlikely to boost these figures significantly in the early stages. The agreement came into effect on August 1.

However, the president of industry association Acicam, Luis Gustavo Flórez, said in recent comments to local media that the free trade agreement would make it easier for Colombian companies to get to know the European market and to build up their business there gradually.

Mr Flórez pointed out that another benefit is easier access for Colombian manufacturers to European research, development and innovation. He said ties to Spanish footwear technology institute Inescop, for example, were already strong, and that Colombian footwear brands are already involved in projects with Inescop to develop comfort shoes and other products.
