Mercedes-Benz appeals to Brussels over French car ban

02/08/2013
The French government has imposed a ban on a number of top-end models of Mercedes-Benz cars because the air-conditioning system the manufacturer has installed uses a banned coolant, R134a.

Mercedes has complained to the European Commission because it says the ban ought not to come into full force until 2017 and that it has decided not to use a recommended alternative product because it says it is flammable.

Jean-Claude Bernard, head of the French Association of Mercedes-Benz dealers, has said R134a is used in 95% of the cars in France that have air-conditioning. He said the models concerned accounted for 50% of his members’ sales, equivalent to around 30,000 cars a year.
