The special leather production industrial zone near Istanbul will use sludge collected from its wastewater treatment plant to create bio energy.

Announced at the end of July, the project will involve an investment of EUR 6.5 million. It will consume 50,000 tonnes of sludge per year. After the process to extract the bio energy, the sludge will be disposed of as non-hazardous solid waste.

On making the announcement, one of the directors of the facility, Ahmet Soydan, said the new idea was a way of showing that the leather industry in the area is taking steps to respect nature and the communities that live in the area.

Waste management has been an issue for the Istanbul leather industrial zone in recent times because new neighbourhoods have grown up around the site.
