Elementis’s chromium profits hit by maintenance shutdown

30/07/2013
Specialty chemical maker Elementis has reported a 10% decline in pre-tax profit for the first half, hurt by a maintenance shutdown at its chromium division.

Pre-tax profit fell to $67.5 million for the six months ended June 30 from $75.1 million a year earlier. Revenue fell 3% to $388.2 million.

Sales at Elementis's chromium business, used by the leather industry, fell 18%.

The company said it needs to periodically close its plants to realign the kilns used to make chrome chemicals but that it was expecting a better second half.
