South African tannery cooperative awarded on Mandela Day

South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has awarded a certificate to a tannery cooperative as part of a programme commemorating Mandela Day.

The newly established Askham Leerlooiry Cooperative was recognised alongside four other local businesses in Andriesvale, Northern Cape province, following a Youth Economic Empowerment Programme hosted by Deputy Minister Thandi Tobias-Pokolo in April.

"It was at that event in April when the Deputy Minister challenged the youth to be economically active by taking advantage of services offered at the DTI and establishing their own businesses,” said Samuel Akrong, the director responsible for cooperative development at the DTI. “This event is Andriesvale's response to the Deputy Minister's challenge."

Askham Leerlooiry will be able to access funds from the Co-operatives Incentive Scheme and other government services to support the business and to create jobs in the local area.

Mandela Day is an annual international celebration in honour of former South African president Nelson Mandela, celebrated on his birthday, 18 July.
